As the relationship evolves through the phases of life

Sex and relationships change naturally throughout life. From the time you are two, to pregnancy and on into life as parents. Each phase brings out new aspects of both the relationship and the body, and it is completely normal for closeness and desire to develop along the way.

When you go from being lovers to having to be parents, a big change happens. Not only in your everyday life, but also in the dynamics between you. During pregnancy, your body takes on more space, thoughts about the future grow, and after the birth, everyday life changes again. All of this naturally affects both intimacy and your relationship.

For some, pregnancy strengthens the feeling of closeness and togetherness. For others, it can be a period where you have to find each other in new ways. Neither is more right than the other. Relationships develop throughout life, and it may take time to find balance in new phases.

The body, desire and changes

The body goes through major changes before, during and after pregnancy, and this can affect both self-image and desire. During pregnancy, some people may experience increased desire and closeness, while others may need more peace and security. Hormones, fatigue and a changing body all play a role.

After giving birth, your focus often changes. Your body needs to heal, your sleep is different, and your energy is spent on your new family. This can mean that your desire for sex may be less for a while. This is completely natural. Desire and intimacy rarely follow a set schedule, and there is no such thing as “back to normal” quickly.

For many, it's about getting to know the body again. Finding peace in the changes and allowing yourself to take it at your own pace. The body has gone through something big, and it's natural that both physical and mental desire develops over time.

Finding each other as a couple again

When you become parents, the relationship changes. The focus shifts from just being lovers to also being a team around a child. It can be a beautiful change, but also an adjustment. Time and energy can feel different, and closeness can take on new forms.

It can be helpful to talk openly about expectations, needs, and feelings. Not because everything has to be solved right away, but because openness creates security. Many find that small moments of contact and understanding can strengthen the relationship more than big plans.

Intimacy doesn't always have to be about sex. It can also be about touch, laughter, support, or just feeling connected in the midst of a busy day. Sometimes it's about allowing your relationship to evolve with life rather than trying to go back to how it was before.

Sex and relationships before, during and after pregnancy are a journey. A journey where both body, identity and relationship change. There is no one right way to be in it. The most important thing is that you give each other space, talk together and meet the changes with curiosity and care.
