Pregnant week 4 – when pregnancy can start to show
Week 4 of pregnancy is often the week when your period doesn't come and you can test for pregnancy. Read what's happening in your body and what symptoms are normal.
Week 4 of pregnancy is for many the week when suspicions of pregnancy arise. Menstruation often fails, and the body begins to produce more of the pregnancy hormone hCG. For some, this week feels like the beginning of pregnancy, both physically and mentally.
Although the pregnancy is still very early, changes are now occurring that can be felt.
What happens in the body in week 4?
In the 4th week of pregnancy, the fertilized egg has attached itself to the uterine lining. Implantation has occurred, and the body increases the production of hCG. The hormone plays a central role in maintaining the pregnancy and sends a signal to the body that menstruation should not occur.
The uterine lining continues to thicken, and the hormonal balance changes significantly to support the pregnancy.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 4
Symptoms in week 4 can vary greatly. Some experience fatigue, sore or tender breasts, mild nausea, or a different body sensation. Others don't notice any difference yet.
Some may also experience light spotting during implantation. This bleeding is typically short-lived and lighter than a normal period.
Can you test positive in week 4?
For many people, the 4th week of pregnancy is the earliest time a pregnancy test can show a positive result. This is because the hCG level is now high enough to be measured in urine.
However, if you test very early in week 4 and get a negative result, it may still be too early. In that case, it may be a good idea to test again after a few days.
What can you do in week 4?
If you suspect you are pregnant, you can take a pregnancy test. Regardless of the result, it is a good idea to pay attention to your body's signals and take into account fatigue and any malaise.
If the pregnancy is confirmed, you may consider contacting your doctor for guidance on what to do next, but there is usually no rush.
Thoughts and feelings in week 4
Week 4 can be emotionally intense. Anticipation, joy, uncertainty, and worry can all be overwhelming at the same time. Many need time to let the news of a possible pregnancy sink in.
There is no one right way to react.
When should you seek medical attention?
In the 4th week of pregnancy, there is usually no need to seek emergency medical attention. However, if you experience severe pain, fever, or persistent bleeding, you should always contact a doctor for an assessment.
Ready for next week
In week 5 of pregnancy, pregnancy signs often begin to become more apparent, and the body is increasingly affected by hormonal changes.
