Pregnant week 3 – fertilization and the beginning of pregnancy
Pregnancy week 3 is the week when fertilization typically takes place. Read what is happening in the body and why pregnancy cannot be tested yet.
For many, week 3 of pregnancy is the week when pregnancy biologically begins. This is when fertilization typically occurs and the body takes the very first steps towards pregnancy – even if there are no obvious signs or symptoms yet.
Week 3 is often characterized by waiting and uncertainty because there is nothing that can yet be confirmed with a test.
What happens in the body in week 3?
In the third week of pregnancy, a mature egg can be fertilized in the fallopian tube if sperm is present. When the egg and sperm fuse, a fertilized egg is formed, which immediately begins to divide. Over the next few days, it slowly moves towards the uterus.
At the same time, the body gradually begins to change its hormonal balance, but the production of the pregnancy hormone hCG is still very low. Therefore, pregnancy cannot be clearly felt or measured at this time.
Implantation – when the pregnancy takes hold
Towards the end of week 3, the fertilized egg may begin to attach itself to the uterine lining. This process is called implantation and is essential for the pregnancy to develop further.
When implantation occurs, the body slowly starts producing hCG, which later makes it possible to get a positive pregnancy test.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 3
Most people experience no symptoms in the third week of pregnancy. Some may feel a slight rumbling in their abdomen or experience a subtle sensation that something is different, but this is very individual.
Any symptoms this week can easily be mistaken for signs of upcoming menstruation.
Can you test positive in week 3?
As a rule, a pregnancy test in week 3 will be negative. The HCG level is still too low to be measured in urine. If you test early and get a negative result, it does not rule out pregnancy.
For most people, waiting until week 4, when menstruation may not occur, will provide more reliable answers.
What can you do in week 3?
In week 3, there is nothing you can actively do to influence the outcome. The pregnancy develops at the cellular level, and the body continues to work on its own.
However, it may be a good idea to continue to take care of your body, avoid alcohol, and pay attention to your general well-being, especially if you are trying to get pregnant.
Thoughts and feelings in week 3
Week 3 can be emotionally challenging. Many find themselves in a waiting position where hope and doubt coexist. It is completely normal to analyze the body a lot during this phase.
There are no right or wrong reactions – only individual experiences.
When should you seek medical attention?
In the third week of pregnancy, there is generally no need to contact a doctor. However, if you experience severe pain, fever or unusual bleeding, you should always seek medical attention.
Ready for next week
In the fourth week of pregnancy, hormone production begins to increase, and for some, pregnancy can now be detected with a pregnancy test. This is often when suspicion really arises.
