Pregnant week 22 – more strength and clearer movements
Pregnancy week 22 is marked by clear movements and a growing belly. Read about symptoms, the body and the baby's development in week 22.
Pregnant week 22 is firmly in the second trimester, where many experience that pregnancy has become a permanent part of everyday life. The stomach is clearly pregnant, and the baby's movements can often be felt both clearly and frequently. At the same time, the body can begin to respond to the increased strain as the pregnancy progresses.
Week 22 can therefore be a period of both physical strength and new physical challenges.
What happens in the body at week 22?
In week 22 of pregnancy, the uterus continues to grow and now fills the abdomen well. This can affect both digestion and breathing, and some experience slight shortness of breath on exertion. The body's center of gravity has changed, which can cause soreness in the back, lower back or pelvis.
The blood volume in the body remains high and the circulation is working intensively. This can lead to hot sensations, swollen feet or legs, and the need for more frequent breaks during the day.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 22
Many people experience a relatively stable period in their 22nd week of pregnancy. Fatigue may still occur, especially towards the end of the day, but energy levels are often better than in the first trimester. Heartburn, indigestion and increased vaginal discharge are common symptoms.
Some also experience tension or itching in the abdomen as the skin stretches. Leg cramps may also occur, especially at night.
What happens to the baby at week 22?
In the 22nd week of pregnancy, the baby is about 27–28 centimeters long and weighs about 430–450 grams. The baby is growing quickly, and the muscles are getting stronger. The movements are stronger and more coordinated, and many can feel clear kicks and rolling.
The baby's senses are developing further. Hearing is improving and the baby can respond to sounds from outside. The skin is thin and covered with amniotic fat, which protects the skin and plays a role in temperature regulation.
Pregnant week 22 and movements
For most people, week 22 of pregnancy is a week where the baby's movements are clearly felt every day. The movements may feel stronger and more targeted than before. However, the intensity can vary, and quiet days are also normal.
There is not yet a fixed pattern of movements, and variation from day to day is completely normal.
Pregnant week 22 and the belly
At week 22, most women's stomachs are clearly pregnant. The uterus is now above the navel, and the body shape has changed significantly. This can affect both balance and movement patterns in everyday life.
Many people experience a need for more support and comfort, both in clothing choices and in daily activities.
What can you do in week 22?
Pregnancy week 22 can be a good time to pay extra attention to posture and relief. Breaks, good working positions and comfortable footwear can make a big difference.
Light exercise can continue to support both physical well-being and mood as long as it feels right for the body.
Thoughts and feelings in pregnancy week 22
For many, pregnancy becomes more concrete and present in week 22. The movements can strengthen the connection with the baby, but at the same time new thoughts about birth, parenthood and the future may arise.
It is completely normal that expectation and thoughtfulness go hand in hand.
When should you seek medical attention?
In pregnancy week 22, there is generally no need for emergency medical care. However, if you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever or significant changes that worry you, you should always contact a doctor or midwife.
