Pregnant week 21 – everyday life with a growing belly

Pregnancy week 21 is marked by a clearly growing belly and daily movements. Read about symptoms and baby development in week 21.

Gravid uge 21 – hverdagen med en voksende mave

Pregnancy week 21 is just past the halfway point and for many, pregnancy is now really starting to become a part of everyday life. The belly is clearly pregnant, and the baby's movements can often be felt daily. At the same time, the body can start to send new signals as the load increases.

Week 21 is therefore a period where joy, adaptation and practical considerations often go hand in hand.

What happens in the body at week 21?

In the 21st week of pregnancy, the uterus continues to grow and increasingly presses on the surrounding organs. This can affect breathing, digestion and posture. The center of gravity changes further, and some experience soreness in the back, lower back or pelvis.

The amount of blood in the body is still high and the circulation is working intensively. This can cause feelings of heat, slight shortness of breath or swollen ankles, especially during physical activity or at the end of the day.

Symptoms in pregnancy week 21

Many people experience a relatively stable period in their 21st week of pregnancy without major discomfort. However, fatigue can still occur, especially if sleep at night is affected by the stomach. Heartburn, indigestion and increased vaginal discharge are common symptoms.

Some also experience stretch mark sensations, itchy skin, or tension in the stomach as the skin loosens.

What happens to the baby at week 21?

At 21 weeks pregnant, the baby is about 26–27 centimeters long and weighs about 360 grams. The baby continues to grow rapidly, and its movements become stronger and more coordinated. The baby can stretch, kick, and turn actively inside the uterus.

The senses are developing further, and the baby can respond to sounds from outside. The taste buds are also developing, and the baby swallows amniotic fluid, which is part of the digestive system's training.

Pregnant week 21 and movements

For most people, week 21 of pregnancy is a week where the baby's movements are clearly felt every day. The movements can vary in strength and frequency, and it is normal for them to change from day to day.

There are no set guidelines for movement patterns yet, and variation is completely normal at this point.

Pregnant week 21 and the belly

By week 21, most women's stomachs are clearly pregnant. The uterus is around the navel or slightly above, and the body shape has changed significantly. This can take some getting used to, both physically and mentally.

Many people experience a need for more comfortable clothing and support in everyday life.

What can you do in week 21?

Week 21 of pregnancy can be a good time to pay attention to ergonomics and breaks in everyday life. Good shoes, back support and relief can make a big difference.

Light movement can continue to support both the body and well-being, as long as it feels right and does not cause discomfort.

Thoughts and feelings in pregnancy week 21

After the halfway mark, pregnancy can feel more real than ever. Anticipation may grow, but at the same time, new concerns or considerations about birth and parenthood may arise.

It is completely normal to have many thoughts during this phase.

When should you seek medical attention?

In the 21st week of pregnancy, there is generally no need for emergency medical care. However, if you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever or significant changes that worry you, you should always contact a doctor or midwife.

Ready for next week
