Pregnant week 20 – halfway through pregnancy
Pregnant week 20 marks the halfway point in your pregnancy. Read about symptoms, baby development and what's happening in your body in week 20.
Pregnancy week 20 marks a major milestone: You are now halfway through your pregnancy. For many, this is a time when pregnancy feels more real and tangible, both because the belly is clearly pregnant and because the baby's movements can often be felt regularly. At the same time, week 20 is often associated with the malformation scan, which can provide further insight into the baby's development.
Week 20 can therefore contain both joy, excitement and reflection.
What happens in the body at week 20?
In week 20 of pregnancy, the uterus continues to grow and now takes up a large part of the abdomen. The body's center of gravity changes further, which can affect balance and posture. Some experience soreness in the back, lower back or pelvis, while others continue to feel relatively well physically.
The amount of blood in the body has increased significantly and the circulation is working intensively. This can cause feelings of heat, swollen ankles or slight shortness of breath, especially during physical activity.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 20
Many women experience a relatively stable phase in their 20th week of pregnancy. Nausea is usually gone, and energy levels may be better than before. However, fatigue may still occur, especially towards the end of the day.
Other common symptoms may include heartburn, indigestion, increased vaginal discharge, and abdominal tension. The skin may feel tighter and some experience itching as the belly grows.
What happens to the baby at week 20?
In the 20th week of pregnancy, the baby is about 25 centimeters long and weighs about 300 grams. The baby is growing rapidly and is becoming more proportionate in body. The movements are more powerful and coordinated, and many can now feel them clearly.
The baby's senses continue to develop. Hearing is more developed, and the baby can respond to sounds from outside. At the same time, the development of the nervous system, muscles and organs continues.
Pregnant week 20 and movements
For many, week 20 of pregnancy is a week where the baby's movements are felt daily. The movements can feel like kicks, rolling or pushing from inside. The intensity and frequency can vary from day to day.
It is still early in terms of fixed movement patterns, and variation is completely normal.
Pregnant week 20 and the belly
At week 20, most women's stomachs are clearly pregnant. The uterus can be felt around the navel, and the shape of the body has changed significantly. For many, the pregnancy now also feels more visible to those around them.
Getting used to your new body shape can be both affirming and challenging.
What can you do in week 20?
Week 20 of pregnancy can be a good time to consider the practical and emotional aspects of pregnancy. The malformation scan often gives rise to many thoughts, and it can be helpful to make room for both joy and worry.
Light movement and breaks in everyday life can support both body and mind, especially as the belly grows.
Thoughts and feelings in pregnancy week 20
Being halfway through can bring up many emotions. For some it brings security and joy, for others it can make the pregnancy more real and therefore more vulnerable. All reactions are normal.
Pregnancy develops not only physically, but also mentally.
When should you seek medical attention?
In the 20th week of pregnancy, there is generally no need for emergency medical care. However, if you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever or sudden changes that worry you, you should contact your doctor or midwife.
