Pregnant week 13 – start of the second trimester
Pregnancy week 13 marks the start of the second trimester. Read about symptoms, bodily changes and what happens to your baby's development in week 13.
Pregnant week 13 marks the beginning of the second trimester, which for many is experienced as a new and more stable phase of pregnancy. The body has gone through major hormonal changes, and for some, more calm is now beginning to set in – both physically and mentally. At the same time, the pregnancy is still developing, and the body continues to work purposefully to adapt.
Week 13 can therefore feel like a turning point, where the excess slowly returns and the pregnancy begins to take on a new meaning.
What happens in the body at week 13?
In week 13 of pregnancy, the placenta has largely taken over the production of the hormones needed to maintain the pregnancy. This may mean that symptoms such as nausea and extreme fatigue are reduced for some. However, the body is still making extensive adjustments, and energy levels may still fluctuate.
The uterus continues to grow and move further up the abdomen. This can change your posture and give you a new sensation in your lower abdomen. The amount of blood in your body has increased, which can lead to feelings of warmth or lightheadedness in some people.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 13
Many people find that by week 13 of pregnancy, the most intense symptoms from the first trimester begin to subside. Nausea may become less pronounced, and appetite may slowly return. Fatigue may still be present, but often feels less overwhelming.
Other symptoms may include breast tenderness, mild headaches, nosebleeds, or skin changes. It is also common to experience more stable moods, although emotional swings may still occur.
What happens to the baby at week 13?
At 13 weeks pregnant, the baby is about 7–8 centimeters long and weighs about 20–25 grams. The body's organs are formed, and development is now focused more on growth and function.
The baby can move its arms and legs more freely, and its muscles are getting stronger. Facial features are clearer, and the eyes and ears are gradually moving towards their final positions. Although the movements cannot yet be felt, the baby is active inside the womb.
Pregnant week 13 and the belly
At week 13, the belly starts to become more visible for some, especially if it is not their first pregnancy. For others, it is still mostly an internal feeling that their body has changed. Clothes may start to feel tight, and many experience a need for more comfortable fits.
It is very individual when the belly becomes visible, and it does not say anything about the health or development of the pregnancy.
What can you do in week 13?
Week 13 of pregnancy can be a good time to adjust your daily routine if your energy starts to return. Many now feel more energetic and able to be more active again, both physically and socially. Light exercise, if it feels right, can be a good way to support your body.
At the same time, it is important to continue to respect the body's limits and make room for breaks when needed.
Thoughts and feelings in pregnancy week 13
For many, week 13 brings a sense of relief. Worries may diminish, and pregnancy may begin to feel more secure and real. At the same time, new thoughts about the future, parenthood, and change may arise.
It is completely normal to experience both joy and thoughtfulness during this phase.
When should you seek medical attention?
In the 13th week of pregnancy, there is generally no need for emergency medical care. However, if you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever or other symptoms that worry you, you should always contact a doctor or midwife.
