Pregnancy week 12 marks the end of the first trimester. Read about symptoms, bodily changes and what happens to the baby's development in week 12.

Gravid uge 12 – afslutningen på første trimester

Week 12 of pregnancy marks the end of the first trimester and is experienced by many as an important transition in pregnancy. For many, the symptoms from the first weeks begin to slowly subside, and the pregnancy may feel more stable. At the same time, many choose to first share their pregnancy with the outside world around this time.

Week 12 can therefore contain both relief, joy and new thoughts about what lies ahead.

What happens in the body at week 12?

In week 12 of pregnancy, the hormonal balance gradually begins to change. The placenta takes over more and more of the hormone production, which may mean that nausea and fatigue decrease for some. However, the body is still making major adjustments, and energy levels may continue to fluctuate.

The uterus continues to grow and can often be felt just above the pubic bone. This can give a different feeling in the abdomen, even though it is not necessarily visibly pregnant yet.

Symptoms in pregnancy week 12

Many women experience symptoms such as nausea and vomiting subside during the 12th week of pregnancy, while energy slowly returns. Others continue to have symptoms, and both are completely normal.

Sore breasts, increased appetite, mild digestive problems and mood swings may still occur. The body is still affected by pregnancy, even though the worst of the hormonal storm is over for many.

What happens to the baby at week 12?

At 12 weeks pregnant, the baby is about 5–6 centimeters long and weighs about 15 grams. Most organs are now formed, and development is increasingly about growth and maturation.

The baby can move its arms and legs, open and close its mouth, and has beginning reflexes. Although the movements cannot yet be felt, the baby is already active inside the womb.

Pregnant week 12 and the belly

For some, the belly starts to become a little more visible at week 12, especially if it's not their first pregnancy. For others, it's still just a matter of a changed body sensation or slight bloating.

When the belly becomes visible varies greatly and does not say anything about how the pregnancy is developing.

Can you test positive at week 12?

At 12 weeks pregnant, a pregnancy test will show a clear and certain positive result. The pregnancy is hormonally well-established at this point.

What can you do in week 12?

Week 12 can be a good time to start taking a more active approach to your pregnancy. Many have now had their first contact with a doctor or midwife and are starting to get an overview of the tests and progress.

At the same time, it is important to continue listening to your body and taking into account both physical and mental needs.

Thoughts and feelings in pregnancy week 12

For many, week 12 of pregnancy feels like a turning point. Worries can take up less space, and the joy of pregnancy can take up more space. At the same time, new thoughts about responsibility, the future, and changes can arise.

All reactions are normal.

When should you seek medical attention?

In the 12th week of pregnancy, there is generally no need to see a doctor urgently. However, if you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever or other symptoms that worry you, you should always contact a doctor.
