Pregnant week 1 – this is how pregnancy starts
Pregnant week 1 marks the start of the pregnancy countdown. Even though you are not yet pregnant, your body is already preparing.
Week 1 of pregnancy can be confusing because you are not yet biologically pregnant. However, week 1 is an important part of pregnancy because this is where the counting begins. Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period , not from fertilization.
This means that the body is already preparing for pregnancy long before you can feel or measure it.
What happens in the body in week 1?
In week 1, you have your period and your body is ending the previous cycle. The lining of your uterus is shed and hormone levels change to prepare for a new cycle. At the same time, your ovaries begin preparing to mature a new egg, which can later be fertilized.
Even though pregnancy is not yet a reality, the body is already doing the work that could potentially lead to pregnancy in the coming weeks.
Symptoms in pregnancy week 1
The symptoms you experience in week 1 are the same as during a normal period. These may include bleeding, abdominal cramping, fatigue, or mood swings. There are no signs of pregnancy yet, as neither fertilization nor hormone production related to pregnancy has occurred.
It's completely normal if week 1 feels like any other menstrual week.
Can you be pregnant in week 1?
No, in week 1 of pregnancy you are not pregnant yet. The week is used solely as part of the way pregnancy is calculated. Fertilization typically does not occur until week 2 or 3, depending on when you ovulate.
Although it may seem technical, this way of counting is important to be able to follow the development of the pregnancy uniformly.
What can you do in week 1?
Week 1 does not require you to do anything special in relation to pregnancy. However, if you are trying to get pregnant, it may be a good idea to start thinking about healthy habits now, such as a varied diet, limiting alcohol and possibly taking folic acid, if relevant to you.
It's not about perfection, but about giving the body good conditions.
Thoughts and feelings at the beginning of the pregnancy calculation
Even though week 1 doesn't feel like pregnancy, it can mentally mark the beginning of a new phase. For some, it fills with anticipation and hope, for others, uncertainty or patience. All reactions are normal.
Pregnancy doesn't always start with clear signs – sometimes it starts with waiting.
When should you seek medical attention?
In week 1, there is no need to contact a doctor specifically regarding pregnancy. However, if you experience discomfort or pain that deviates significantly from your normal period, you should always seek medical advice.
Ready for next week
In week 2 of pregnancy, ovulation approaches and the body enters its most fertile phase. This is where the biological prerequisites for pregnancy really begin to take shape.
