Ømme brystvorter: Gode råd til lindring

Sore nipples are something many people experience at the beginning of breastfeeding.
It can sting, feel tight, or be directly painful – especially when the baby latches on.

This might make you think:
Is this normal – and what can I do about it?

For many, it's a phase that can be relieved with the right adjustments.

Why do you get sore nipples?

Initially, the nipples are not used to the strain of breastfeeding.

At the same time, soreness can arise if the baby doesn't latch on quite correctly, or if there is friction during breastfeeding.

It is therefore often a combination of:

  • adaptation
  • latch technique
  • frequent feeding

When is it normal?

Slight soreness at the beginning can be normal.

But pain should not be persistent or so intense that breastfeeding feels overwhelming.

If it hurts throughout the entire feeding or afterwards, it's a sign that something needs to be adjusted.

The most important factor: latch technique

The most common cause of sore nipples is that the baby does not have a correct latch.

When the baby takes a larger part of the breast into their mouth – not just the nipple itself – the pressure is distributed better.

Small adjustments in position and technique can often make a big difference.

What can you do yourself?

There are several ways to relieve soreness and support healing.

For example, you can:

  • ensure correct latch technique
  • let nipples air dry after feeding
  • apply a drop of breast milk to the skin

It's about protecting the skin and reducing irritation.

When should you seek help?

If you experience:

  • sores or cracks
  • bleeding
  • persistent pain

…then it is important to get help.

The sooner you act, the easier it is to correct the issue.

Give your body time

Breastfeeding is new for both you and your baby.

It's completely normal that it requires adaptation, and that your body needs to adjust to the new situation.

With the right adjustments, most people will find that the soreness subsides.

You don't have to accept pain

Although soreness can be normal at the start, breastfeeding shouldn't hurt.

If it does, it's a sign that something can be improved – and help is available.
